Does it really help? In collaboration with researchers, Perspectief looked into the impact of restorative mediation.
Multiple (scientific) researches have shown that participants of restorative mediation are better able to process the event and move on from it.
Contact with the other person offers the opportunity to ask questions and receive answers, contributes to normalizing the image of the other person, and enables people to retake control.
Victims that participated in restorative mediation indicate that they got answers to their questions, that their image of the other person became normal again, and that they were able to take back control. This causes reduced fear and anger.
Offenders indicate that they gain more insight into the effects for victims, and are able to empathize more with them because of this. They are able to feel shame and take accountability for their behaviors. They indicate that they feel relieved afterwards and are touched by hearing the story of the other person. This contributes positively to reduced recidivism.
